Meaningful family involvement is a crucial part of an adult loved one’s recovery from a mental illness. Research is showing an increasing amount of evidence that family involvement benefits the individual, the family, the mental health system and the economic burden to society. It is considered to be an evidence based practise.
The Manitoba Schizophrenia Society has sponsored and developed an online survey to gain feedback from family members regarding their experience of family involvement with mental health services. This survey has been initiated by family members and developed in consultation with mental health service providers. Manitoba’s mental health system recognizes the importance of having people with lived experience and their family members actively engaged in providing feedback about services. The data from the survey will be shared with the WRHA Adult Mental Health, the Mental Health and Addictions branch of Manitoba Health, as well as with the MSS board members. It is the hope that the data and comments collected will have a positive effect in improving family engagement practices in adult mental health programs. The results may also be used to influence government policy and for staff education and training purposes.
